Akuma is a character in the Street Fighter series and one of its most popular & perhaps all of Capcom. He appears as both a boss and a regular character and is notorious as the former.

Note: This page will not cover his appearances in Tekken 7 and Capcom Fighting Evolution. Cyber Akuma has his own page.

Why He Sucks As A Boss

Street Fighter 2 Series as regular Akuma

  1. Insane damage; Gohadoukens can take half your health bar away & his Goshoryukens, depending on how it connects, can take away two thirds of your health bar!
  2. Incredible speed, putting enough pressure on you to give him free throws.
  3. His Aerial Hadoukens give him an immense advantage.
  4. Absurd priority; he can shoot 2 aerial Hadokens, making it hard to approach him & can stop a Psycho Crusher at the last moment with a Shoryuken.
  5. Frustrating A.I.
  6. Teleports all the time.
  7. To get to him, you need to use no continues & one of the following: spend less than 1,500 seconds of total game time, score 1.2 million points or hold an attack button after 12 consecutive victories. This is easier said than done considering the merciless AI in some editions & of certain characters (Guile, Ryu, Vega, Sagat, etc.) in general.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 as Shin Akuma (Arcade Mode)

  1. To fight him, you need 3 Perfects, not lose a single round and 5 super KOs, which is easier said than done considering that some characters (Sagat, Ken, Adon, etc.) can get very annoying.
  2. Huge priority in all of his moves.
  3. Retains his Aerial Hadoukens and still just as painful.
  4. Unbelievable speed on literally everything, making him extremely hard to punish.
  5. He can combo moves that regular Akuma can't do.
  6. Hellish A.I.
  7. Only one try. Lose to him & go straight to the final fight when you continue.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 as Shin Akuma (Dramatic Battle Mode)

  1. Even more overpowered than in SF2.
  2. Since this mode has you & your CPU partner on-screen whom share a health bar, he can obliterate you both at the same time with minimal effort.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 As Shin Akuma

  1. Suffers some of the same problems as Final Bison: Spams certain moves, hellish A.I. and you have only one shot.

Street Fighter 3: Second impact (As Akuma and Shin Akuma)

  1. To fight Regular Akuma, you need to get 3 Perfects, not lose a single round and get less than 3 C Victories (defeating opponents with chip damage), Gill included.
  2. Brutal & Cheap A.I.
  3. To fight him, you must do a perfect or a super K.O. in any of the rounds while fighting Akuma.
  4. Colossal damage with everything.
  5. Again retains his aerial hadoukens.
  6. Defeating Shin Akuma will not give you an ending, but the end credits instead.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 as both Akuma and Oni

  1. Beyond absurd criteria. While Akuma requires 1 Perfect and losing no round, for Oni you need 1 Perfect, 10 First Attacks, 5 Super/Ultra Combo Finishes & defeat final boss Seth with a Super/Ultra Combo Finish, all without losing once.
  2. He can turn really annoying with his A.I.
  3. You only have one shot against him.

Capcom vs SNK 2 as Shin Akuma

  1. Like God Rugal, you need 2 of the following: Earn 1500 GP, defeat the mid-boss (Geese/Bison) and get a Finest/Dramatic K.O.
  2. He appears at random, so you may face God Rugal whether you like it or not.
  3. He can obliterate your health bar with all of his attacks dealing eye-popping damage, especially his Messatsu Goshoryu.
  4. He adores spamming Aerial Hadoukens and Teleporting.
  5. Blindingly fast, giving you no time to react.
  6. He is going berserk from absorbing Rugal's Orochi power, after all.
  7. Also like God Rugal, he has 2 insta-kill supers. The first is his signature Shun Goku Satsu/Raging Demon/Instant Hell Murder. The second is Misogi, a new move wherein he vanishes and then falls over you with an insta-kill karate chop. Fortunately, he rarely uses them, not that he needs to.

SVC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom as Shin Akuma

  1. Brutal A.I.
  2. While not on Capcom Vs. SNK 2 levels of bad, he still does massive damage.
  3. His Misogi is no longer an instant kill but is unblockable now.
  4. He can use his level one supers at will.
  5. Just like Serious Mr. Karate, his playable version is so horribly nerfed, his regular form does more damage.

Street Fighter X Tekken

  1. Overpowered as always.
  2. He's the game's only character with 2 supers.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. SVC Chaos aside, he's a blast to play as due to how broken he is.
  2. Selectable from the start in some games, and he's a well-balanced offensive shotoclone to the point he's his own thing.
  3. Fantastic theme songs.
  4. Pretty cool supers, the Shun Goku Satsu in particular.
  5. An unforgettable character as a whole.
