Control (007: Goldeneye)

From Atrocious Gameplay Wiki

The Janus Control Centre is a level from 007: Goldeneye. It's the sixteenth level, and the second part of the seventh mission. In the mission, you have to disable the goldeneye satellite, while destroying the armored mainframes and protecting Natalya.

Many fans considered Control to be the hardest level of 007: Goldeneye.

Why It Sucks

  1. The level is very long, and filled with enemies.
  2. Should you do the mission on Secret Agent/007 Agent difficulty, drone guns will appear at the start of the level, which can hinder you. Also, body armor will be less frequent, and auto-aim will barely work.
  3. You have to protect Natalya, while she reprograms the satellite. Don't expect her help to gunfight.
  4. Beginners's trap: If you kill Boris Grishenko, rather than keeping him alive, Natalya will scold you and refuse to help you (despite the movie where the game is based showing the opposite), failing the mission as a result. And BTW, the mission doesn't imply anywhere (including reports from M, Q and Moneypenny) that you shouldn't kill Boris (not even on the objective).
  5. Armored Mainframes can only be destroyed with the remote mines, and some of them are protected by a glass that can only be destroyed with explosives.
  6. When Natalya is reprogramming the satellite, you have to be careful and kill enemies that doesn't have armor and berets (which targets Natalya), as well as killing the enemies that has light armor and berets (which targets you instead). However, you might not know that, the first time you play the mission.
  7. If you accidentaly destroy the console's screen or keyboard at the beginning of the level, Natalya will be unable to open you the door, and the mission will fail.
  8. While the D5K Deutsche has a fair amount of ammo, it lingers from the PP7's ammo as well. And keep in mind, on 00 Agent difficulty you get the least amount of ammunition from weapon pickups.
  9. You can only get 10 remote mines in a spot, and the only way that you can get other explosives is to wait for an enemy to pull a grenade and kill him before its pin is removed.
  10. Even after Natalya has reprogrammed the satellite, you still have to carry her to the exit.
  11. While is true that Natalya carries the Cougar Magnum, you are unable to get it, unless you use cheats.
  12. Depending on which difficulty you are, enemies can become a cakewalk or a nightmare to fight.
  13. Wasted Opportunity: the level's layout is suitable for a Multiplayer's map, yet Control is not on the multiplayer map's choice.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The soundtrack is good.
  2. Boris' "I AM INVINCIBLE" quote is there.
  3. At least the D5K Deutsche is very common to get.
  4. If you complete the mission on Secret Agent difficulty under 10 minutes, you obtain the Unlimited Ammo cheat, which is awesome.
