Escort missions

From Atrocious Gameplay Wiki

Escort missions are missions where the player character must escort another character or other being to a certain location. They tend to become infamous due to the problems explained below.

Why Most of them Suck

  1. They usually have character AI allies that are either stupid, cowardly, have low health, or unable to fight/defend for themselves.
  2. They are generally boring because the player character usually has to slow down for these events.
  3. They also tend to have artificial difficulty since some have no checkpoints, meaning you have to start all over if you lose a live.
  4. They tend have horrendous level setup, usually at the expense of cheap enemy and obstacle placement.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. Some escort missions are well-done.

Examples

  1. Every escort quest in Dragon's Dogma -
  2. The Alchemist Mission (Spyro 2:Ripto's Rage!) - There is an escort mission where Spyro has to escort the Alchemist and keep the Earthshapers away from him so that he can use the potion to free Hunter after encasing his feet in rock. The Infamous parts come from the Alchemist walking in an awkward and being a total idiot in A.I as he would walk into an earthshaper, Forcing Spyro to start over. The most infamous part is that despite the Alchemist having take a long and dangerous path, Hunter is next to the standing point where the Alchemist was.
  3. Escort men through sewers (Jak II) -
  4. Meat Circus Escort mission (Psychonauts) - There is an Escort Mission where Li'l Oly has to catch a bunny before he gets beaten to death by monstrous bunnies that come out of meat grinders.
  5. Most of the Ashley Graham missions in Resident Evil 4- Especially because they are accompanied by Ashley screaming the same "Leon! LEON!!!" voice every time she is in danger; an example of an escort mission combined with a repetitive one-liner.
  6. For Pete's Sake (Earthworm Jim)- One with exceptionally horrendous pacing, as every time Peter Puppy gets hit, he drags you (as Jim) back further down the level and makes you (as Jim) redo some of the stage.
  7. Scrapper Eldin Volcano mission (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword)- Pointless escort mission to begin with, as logically, Link should've been able to skydive to the Eldin Volcano eagle statue on top of the volcano.
  8. The Field (Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures)- The first part of the stage has the Links do an escort mission with Malon, who only has one heart container. Should Malon die, the rest of the links will automatically die as well.
  9. Yunobo Death Mountain mission (Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild)- The player must protect Yunobo from being spotted by Sentries on Death Mountain; a combination of a stealth and escort mission. The punishment for being spotted is less severe than death, as the player must simply dodge magma obsatcles for doing so.
  10. Teehee Valley (Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga)- An escort mission where the Mario Bros. must escort Princess Peach to Little Fungitown. The player has to also make sure she is not out of sight on the GBA or 3DS screen. If she is attacked by an enemy or leaves the screen for even a split second, the Mario Bros must bail her out in a pipe and redo the segments over again.
  11. Many levels in the Wing Commander series - In this series, there are many missions where the player must escort a transport or any other ship to a specific NAV point. Some missions, such as Dakota 1 in Wing Commander (1990) have multiple ships to escort, such as escorting one and escorting a different ship to a new location immediately afterword in the aforementioned Dakota 1.
