They don't call him "Rubberband Earl" for nothing!

Franchise: Need for Speed

"This guy hails from the lower east side of Rockport City but now rides on the coast. He’s a big fan of imports and goes out of his way to take on the big blocks." ― Earl's bio

Who would've thought that this Blacklist racer would be even tougher to beat than Razor himself?

Eugene "Earl" James is the 7th boss (and 9th racer on the eponymous "Blacklist") in the 2005 racing game Need for Speed: Most Wanted. He drives a white Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (CT9A), and has two races as part of his rival challenge: "North Bay Cannery" (a Speedtrap race) and "Camden & Route 55" (a Sprint race). Beating Earl is required to unlock Downtown Rockport, the third and final borough in the game. Also, beating him will unlock the Subaru Impreza WRX STi (GDB-D) and Mazda RX-7 (FD3S) for purchase in the Car Lot (note that the Impreza is already unlocked by default in My Cars/Quick Race Mode).

He gained infamy among the franchise's fanbase due to his brutal difficulty and rubberband AI.

Why He Sucks

  1. He's literally the "digital avatar" of rubberband AI even compared to the final boss and main antagonist, Clarence "Razor" Callahan.
  2. His car, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII GSR (CT9A), is All-Wheel Drive and tends to outperform the other cars available during the stage (as he also has certain parts equipped that the player has yet to unlock) due to its powerful top-speed and acceleration.
  3. Speaking of Rubberband AI, his races are luck-based due to the cars available not being maneuverable enough for his races (as long you're using the Speedbreaker properly).
  4. During the races, if Earl crashes his car (for example, the right corner near the Omega Power Station in "Camden & Route 55") and the player attempts to outpace him for most of the tracks' progress, his Rubberband AI will skyrocket and accelerate in a rather insane extent that even when making a tiniest mistake when going through sharp corners, Earl will easily catch up and decimate you for the rest of the race like there's no tomorrow! As a result, when said crash happens, you'll have to immediately slow down until he recovers in order to tone down the Rubberband AI for the rest of the race.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Just like every Blacklist racer, he finally gets his comeuppance in the end of the game by getting arrested by Rockport Police Department.
  2. His theme song, "Feed The Addiction" by Ils is very catchy.
  3. His modified Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII GSR (CT9A) looks cool and it's one of the best cars in the game once you either unlock it or obtain it by using a "Pink Slip" marker.
    • However, you can re-create it in the PC version if you have the Extra Options mod.

  • If you have won Baron's Porsche Cayman S (987), you can use it to beat Earl.
