The Fake Item Box is an item in the Mario Kart series. This item is so bad that it was dropped from the series after Mario Kart Wii. It is considered one of the worst items in Mario Kart history.

The Fake Item Box is an item that players usually obtain in first or second place. It works in the exact same way as a Banana (which is an overhated item and has been in every Mario Kart game), but as of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! it cannot be used to block incoming items.

Why It Sucks Now

  1. This item is basically just an even more undesirable version of the Banana, as it cannot block incoming items like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
  2. This item is supposed to trick players into thinking it's a real Item Box, but it fails miserably at its job. In Double Dash and Wii, it is colored red, making it easy to tell apart from Item Boxes. They really tried to make this work for twelve years (from 1996 to 2008), or five games (from 64 to Wii).
  3. To make matters worse, you can get this item when you're in first place.
  4. It is usually placed somewhere on the track that isn't near any Item Boxes, making it even easier to avoid.
    • Fortunately, it's much harder to dodge in Mario Kart 64.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. It is much better implemented in Mario Kart 64, as it can block items and float in mid-air in said game.
  2. In Wii, if you hold this item, it can become a INFINITE shield, a think that make the Triple Banana look like a joke
  3. It looks similar to a regular Item Box in Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart DS.
  4. Much like the Thunder Cloud, this item is thankfully gone as of Mario Kart 7.
