King Dedede (Super Smash Bros. For 3DS & WIi U)

From Atrocious Gameplay Wiki
Wha's happened to da Mighteh King Dedede, King of Memes and Clobbarah of dat der' Kirbehs?

NOTE: This page is discussing on how badly nerfed he was in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and 3DS, not to mention that this page is only judging him on his moveset and playstyle, not him as a character.

King Dedede (written as King DeDeDe or King De De De in certain older games), also known as "Triple D", is Kirby's arch-enemy and the main antagonist and/or anti-hero in Nintendo and HAL Laboratory's long-running Kirby video game series. He also appeared in the Super Smash Bros. Series ever since Brawl, which he is fun to play as in. In Smash 4, however, he was badly nerfed.

Why He's Dededefective

  1. King Dedede suffers due to the weakening or total removal of moves and/or mechanics that were important to his neutral game.
  2. His former back aerial is also removed, nerfing it overall.
  3. His grab game became significantly worse, which has gone from one of the best to below average.
  4. Additionally, he retains his poor mobility and sluggish frame data from Brawl: he has among the slowest walking and dashing speeds, making it harder to hit opponents or escape pressure.
  5. His air speed, which was already the slowest in Brawl, has become even slower, hurting his air game and recovery.
  6. King Dedede's moveset also has among the slowest moves in the game, with only his down tilt, neutral aerial and standing grab being active before frame 9.
  7. These traits not only hinder Dedede offensively, but defensively as well; alongside his large size, considerable weight and fast falling speed, Dedede's mobility and frame data issues result in him being among the characters that are most vulnerable to rushdowns, combos, and camping, with only his moderate gravity enabling him to not be as vulnerable as other heavyweights or fast-fallers would be to them.
  8. Dedede is also no longer capable of camping himself due to his new side special, Gordo Throw, being reflected by any attack that deals at least 2%, and it moves at high speed, making it impossible to dodge.
  9. Finally, Dedede suffers from disproportionately weak strength for a super heavyweight: his fastest moves fail to KO until very high percentages, whereas his slowest moves are among the most punishable in the game.
  10. What’s worse is that he was nerfed in the Smash 4 patches despite already being bad, which was completely sad and unnecessary.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. He does have his strengths, as his primary strength is most of his attacks having large, disjointed range, courtesy of his hammer. In addition, he also possesses some very powerful attacks, such as his forward smash, down smash, back aerial and down aerial, the latter two mentioned also function as good edgeguarding moves.
  2. Dedede also boasts arguably the greatest overall endurance in the game, being the most difficult character to KO vertically, due to having the third highest weight. He is also very difficult to KO horizontally despite being a fast-falling character with slow air speed, which is also due to his high weight.
  3. He also has the second fastest falling speed, which can be great for mix-ups.
  4. He boasts an impressive recovery for a heavyweight, due to his multiple midair jumps, which can mix-up his air game.
    • Super Dedede Jump is not only strong, but is also part of his impressive recovery.
  5. He did get 1 buff to down throw: its angle was altered, making it harder to DI. Unfortunately, this was countered by down throw also getting a nerf by increasing its knock back scaling, making it harder to combo at high percents.
  6. He has noticeably improved in Smash Ultimate, where he became a much better fighter.
  7. His legendary crouch is still awesome.

  • King Dedede has the longest star KO voice clip in the game. Its duration is so long that it can still be heard briefly even after the star KO. He and Cloud are the only two characters with this quirk.
  • If King Dedede is footstooled while performing his side taunt on the 3DS version, the taunt will be cancelled, but Dedede's mouth will stay open for the same duration as the taunt usually lasts.
