Meta Knight (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)

From Atrocious Gameplay Wiki
When he says "Know my power!", he's not kidding. You WILL know his power.

NOTE: This page is discussing on how broken he was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, not to mention that this page is only judging him on his moveset and playstyle, not him as a character.

Meta Knight (Known in Japan as Meta Naito) is a major character in the Kirby series. He first appeared in Kirby's Adventure in 1993 as one of the bosses. He also appeared in the Super Smash Bros. Series ever since Brawl, which he is fun to play as in. However, the same can't be said for his debut in Brawl, where he was too broken and had an overpowered and unfair start as a playable character in Smash.

Why He's a "Knightmare"

  1. He was a stupidly overpowering and broken character, being made a high tier character in the game in the worst way imagineable.
  2. His attacks generally have extremely high speed in terms of both startup and ending lag.
  3. Nearly all of his standard attacks have transcendent priority.
  4. He has a small shield which makes him somewhat vulnerable to shield stabbing from certain characters.
  5. He is in almost no trouble offstage due to a large amount of recovery options that grant him a long, relatively safe and unpredictable recovery.
  6. He also has extremely effective edgeguarding options including moves that can wall of pain, two semi-spikes, and easy stage spikes against certain characters.
  7. His poor air speed and slow grab release animation also make him susceptible to grab release combos from many characters, most notably Marth, who can combo Meta Knight into a variety of moves, including forward aerial, dash attack, Dancing Blade, short hop Dolphin Slash, buffered down aerial, buffered up aerial, or buffered neutral aerial from his air release.
  8. His gliding ability is like Pit's and Charizard's except that he can damage you on contact.
  9. Although Meta Knight has a great array of recovery options, they all leave him helpless.
  10. He additionally may have trouble KOing against good DI and/or momentum cancelling, particularly if his best finishers are getting stale.
  11. He also has many multi-hit moves that are easily SDIable, limiting his ability to rack up damage easily, along with his moves generally dealing average damage.
  12. Due to the aforementioned reasons, he's been banned from Brawl tournaments.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. He does have his weaknesses, as he is a lightweight character, meaning he is knocked out fairly easily, especially against characters with many high-power attacks such as Snake.
  2. He is in almost no trouble offstage due to a large amount of recovery options that grant him a long, relatively safe and unpredictable recovery.
  3. He also has extremely effective edgeguarding options including moves that can wall of pain, two semi-spikes, and easy stage spikes against certain characters.
  4. Meta Knight's edgeguarding capability is unarguably the best in the game, as it is his ability to gimp opponents.
  5. He also has many great combo setups, with a very strong combo game due to easily being able to string many of his attacks together.
  6. Some of his moves are able to break opponent combos, which gets him easily out of a situation.
  7. His KO moves are quick, powerful, and reliable.
  8. He can also play defensively without much trouble, with his aerials being able to space well and his great ability to air camp, along with his very fast roll and air dodge (though his spot dodge is only average).
  9. The former also gives him access to a huge and fast glide toss that covers a very long distance like Pit and Charizard.
  10. He was better in Flash than a year in Brawl, also he was also better in Flash 2.
  11. He has been noticeably nerfed in Smash 4 and Ultimate, making him a properly balanced, but not less fun character.

Trivia

  • Meta Knight is the first character to have a different victory fanfare from the other characters of his universe, and the only one in Brawl to have this feature. Not only that, but he was also the first Brawl newcomer to be announced.
  • Meta Knight, the Ice Climbers, Ganondorf, Mr. Game & Watch, Samus are only characters whose icon in the Subspace Emissary and the Sticker menu is not based on their renders.
