There is only one Sonic.

Metal Sonic is the secondary antagonist and penultimate boss of Sonic The Fighters, this boss is widely infamous for his cheap unfair difficulty.

Why He's Rusty In This Game

  1. Incredibly brutal AI, meaning that he will attack non-stop just to breathe your air.
  2. Most of the time, Metal Sonic conkers up his shields to block your every move.
  3. A wide variety of moves, all of which can be a real pain by their easy inputs, seismic damage and tearing through shields like it's nothing:
    1. Scratch Claw, Double Scratch: Unlike most playable characters, Metal Sonic only has this basic two punch combo, not all that dangerous. He almost always uses it when the match begins, no big deal until...
      1. One-Two Slash: This one-third-health-bar-taking quick slash attack that can come right after if he feels like it. It, along with the Metal Laser below, are the only truly unblockable moves of his, capable of both breaking your shield and hurting you at the same time. He can also use its solo variant, the Slash Claw, anytime he wants.
    2. Airplane Drop: Based off Tails' annoying throw, he grabs you, flies high into the air and then drops you to the ground, causing massive damage. Just like the two-tailed fox himself, he adores that move.
    3. Stomp: If a character is flat on the ground, Metal Sonic can stomp his foot on the player, causing cheap hits. He can also use it as a surprise stun counter when you're in the middle of a combo.
    4. High Kick: Metal Sonic can kick upright with either his left or right foot, sending the player high into the air.
    5. Metal Laser: Metal Sonic can fire a blue energy laser from his chest. While that attack is rarely used, not only can this attack come out of nowhere, but it too can also cause massive damage.
    6. Charge Thrust: His take on Knuckles' glide, Metal Sonic charges head first at the player a la Psycho Crusher. This is probably the most infamous part of the battle, as not only can he spam this attack, as well as being both hard to avoid and unblockable, but it also takes huge chunks of the player's health. Blocking it destroys 2 to 3 shields in a row at best, so expect them to be gone quickly.
    7. Drill Dive & Hip Dive: Mid-air drill & stomp moves he can use while jumping, with high priority & fast reaction to boot. He often uses them after an Airplane Drop just for cheap hits. Should you pin him to a wall, he can run up it & use them as a surprise counter because to hell with the rules.
    8. Horse Kick: Dashes a bit for a high-range painful kick. Imagine if Motaro rammed into you to kick you.
  4. The arena is cluttered and small, giving you no room to maneuver.
  5. Metal Sonic is incredibly fast and can easily avoid the player's strikes.
  6. One horrid tactic he adores using is tossing you after destroying one of his shields. Expect him to do this a lot.
  7. While we're on the subject, he constantly tries to grab you, so you'll spend much of the fight getting dropped in the air rather than fighting him.
  8. Most of his moves break your shields, leaving you literally defenseless, much to his delight. You can choose to regain them in-game via the Options menu before starting the game, but it comes at the cost of upping said defense games way more, since the CPU get theirs back as well.
  9. Not only is the battle very cheap, but the reward that you can get is what makes things worse. In Sonic The Fighters, you can play as Super Sonic as long as you play through Story Mode as Sonic and not lose a single match against any of the eight characters. Then, win the first round against Metal Sonic without losing once. Once that's done, Super Sonic can be playable in the second round by triggering Hyper mode (Backwards, P+K+G). Screw up & you must do the entire thing all over again. Predictably, this is super frustrating to do.
  10. The game comes with a "payback" system, which works by making the dominant's attacks weaker & vice-versa to keep both fighters alert. This also applies to Metal, where his stupidly strong moves become even more powerful when you take the lead, as if he wasn't cheap enough.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Top-notch music.
  2. The arena is very cool. You're fighting Metal Sonic in a cage high above an abyss.
  3. As explained in #8, you can unlock Super Sonic and he's an awesome sight to behold.
  4. Nothing beats the catharsis out of smashing his face in as Super Sonic.
  5. Playable in the X360/PS3 ports, unnerfed.
