Smash and Crab (Super Mario Party)

From Atrocious Gameplay Wiki

Smash and Crab is a 1 vs. 3 minigame appearing in Super Mario Party. Its name is a pun on "smash and grab". Many regard this as the worst 1-vs-3 minigame in Super Mario Party due to how it leans more towards the solo player.

This minigame might look like fun, but once you start playing it, you're gonna have a bad time.

The minigame is set on a beach. The solo player is standing on a pier, while the team players are inside a giant robot that looks like a Sidestepper. While one team player moves the robot, the other two control their respective hammers to crush the solo player, who can also move around. If the solo player manages to evade the team players' attacks for thirty seconds, they win; otherwise, if a hammer hits the solo player, the team players win.

Why It Should Get Smashed

  1. Despite being a three players try to eliminate the solo player type of minigame, this minigame leans more towards the solo player because it's easy for the solo player to survive. When you're playing as the team players, it's really annoying that every time you try to hit the solo player with one of the hammers, the solo player will keep dodging to survive.
  2. Even when you're close to hitting the solo player with the hammer, the solo player will move to the opposite side before the hammer's drop shadow moves to the solo player's direction.
  3. If you're playing this minigame with CPU players and one of the CPU players is controlling the crab robot, they'll almost always never cooperate with you.
  4. Playing this minigame in Challenge Road is a little bit worse, as it is required to be completed as well as the other minigames to get the Gem of Passion.
    • Its hard mode variant in Challenge Road is no better because, this time, you're the solo player while the CPU players are controlling the crab robot. Thankfully, the hard mode variant of this minigame is optional.
  5. The most infamous part of Smash and Crab is when you run out of time: The crab robot will get destroyed while the solo player celebrates their victory.
  6. Wasted Potential: The idea of using the crab robot to attack the solo player is nice, only for the execution to not be very well.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The idea of the minigame being on the beach and controlling the crab robot that resembles a Sidestepper from the original Mario Bros. is cool.
  2. This minigame is easier when you're controlling the crab robot while the CPU players use the hammers. When controlling the crab robot, you can easily keep a close eye on the solo player via following their direction and you'll have a much easier time with the minigame.
  3. Seeing the solo player get knocked out of the pier after getting eliminated is pretty satisfying.

  • Play this minigame with two human players instead of CPU players.
  • When one of you're controlling the crab robot, make sure you follow the solo player's direction in order to let your friends hit them.
  • If a friend is controlling the crab robot and you're having difficulties, don't worry. Your friend will help out by keeping an eye on the solo player so you and your other friend can hit the solo player with the hammers.
