This is why special stages should NEVER have slippery controls.

Special Stages in Sonic Heroes are Bonus Challenges that can be accessed through a stage like Seaside Hill or Hang Castle, or let you get Chaos Emeralds in stages like Ocean Palace and Mystic Mansion. While Sonic Heroes is a great game, its special stages are the complete opposite of that.

Why They Suck

  1. Accessing them is kinda tedious on its own, first you need to head into a stage, then you need to grab a key inside a cage using the power member of your team, then you need to carry it with you throughout the whole entire level and you cannot take a SINGLE hit. If you take a hit, you lose the key and need to restart the whole level in order to get the key.
  2. It's very easy to lose your key if you're not playing as Team Rose and if you're playing levels like Mystic Mansion and Final Fortress.
  3. The controls are so slippery and loose and it's very easy to run into the spike balls because of that. (unless you're playing special stage 1)
  4. The Chaos Emerald special stages are required in order to access the Last Story, and they don't unlock the ability to play as Team Super Sonic in regular levels.
  5. If you fail a special stage in the story, you need to head to Challenge Mode and grab the key again in order to retry a special stage.
  6. Getting the Chaos Emeralds through special stages feels unnecessary since in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, you got the Chaos Emeralds throughout the story. Why couldn't they just make it so every team got a Chaos Emerald throughout the story instead of making these special stages? OK, maybe Sega wanted to bring back the special stages in console games since they were only in the handheld games like the Advance trilogy, but still.
  7. You can only get the Chaos Emerald special stages through the second act in a stage, doing it in the first act will just give you a bonus challenge.
  8. There's also a bug where you can go backwards in the special stage.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. You only have to beat them once with a single team, which is good because doing them with all the teams (especially Team Dark) would've been a nightmare.
  2. The special stages would later be remade in the 3DS version of Sonic Generations and are MUCH better there.
  3. The music that plays during the special stages is pretty upbeat and catchy.

Tips

  • Get the keys to access the special stages with Team Rose, as their levels are shorter and easier, meaning you're less likely to lose your key in stages like Mystic Mansion and Final Fortress.
  • Generally play as the Power character (Big recommended) in the special stages as they are easier to control.
  • When the spike balls appear, try to slow down and go through them carefully.
